How is Asian handicap betting different from 1x2 (three-way) betting?

The Asian handicap style of betting was primarily created as a means of making betting on soccer matches more attractive to the customer. It has for a long time been the vastly preferred way to bet in the Far East and is rapidly gaining ground in the west wherever people gain familiarity with it.

A handicap is created to give a roughly equal chance to both teams. The favoured team will have to overcome a deficit of goals.

An example: If Arsenal were to play at home against Everton, Arsenal might be given a handicap of -1.5, meaning that to determine the bet outcome, you would take Arsenal’s score, subtract 1.5 and then look at who wins. For example, if the final score is Arsenal 3 – Everton 1, then the score including the handicap is Arsenal 1.5 – Everton 1. In that example, the winning bet is Arsenal. But if the final score is Arsenal 2 – Everton 1, then the score including handicap is Arsenal 0.5 – Everton 1, making Everton the winning bet.So the question is changed from “Will the outcome be Home, Draw or Away?” to in this case “Will Arsenal win with more than 1.5 goals?”

Push

A lot of the time, the handicap will be x.5 goals, like in the example above. This eliminates any tie. However, the handicap may be a whole number (0,1,2 etc.). In this case, the final score including handicap may be a tie. If so, the entire stake is returned to the player (like a void bet/no bet).

Quarterball / Split handicap

The “advanced” feature of asian handicap odds is the quarterball, or the x.25 and x.75 handicaps. The quarterball adds another dimension to the betting appreciated by many bettors.

The concept is actually very simple. For example, a handicap of -0.75 means that you are getting two bets: Half of your stake is placed with a -0.5 handicap and the other half with a -1 handicap.Example: €100 bet on Arsenal -1.75 at odds 1.92 means you have €50 on Arsenal -1 and €50 on Arsenal -0.5, both at odds 1.92.This gives three possible outcomes:

Arsenal wins with 2 or more goals

Both bets win

€192 (€100*1.92)

Arsenal wins with 1 goal

The -0.5 bet wins

The -1.0 bet pushes

   €96   (€50*1.92)
+ €50   (returned)
= €146

Arsenal draws or loses

Some advantages of Asian handicap betting over 1x2 betting

  1. Better payback! The returns are on average better on Asian handicap betting – with 1x2 the total payback to the bettors is lower.
  2. If you like a favorite, you don’t have to risk a lot to get a decent return. With Asian handicap you will get odds close to 2, whereas 1x2 odds can of course be very low for a big favourite.
  3. If you like the outsider, you don’t have to make a long shot bet that you know is probably going to lose. Instead you get odds close to 2 and “added goals” positive handicap (which is just another way of saying that the favourite has a negative handicap). This gives you a better chance of profiting on being right.
